Winter 2010

Dear Neighbor:

2010 has been a busy, productive year for the Glenview Park District! Attendance at our camps was at an all-time high and Flick and Roosevelt Outdoor Pools wrapped up their most successful season since they were rebuilt in 2004. Though terrific summer weather certainly was a factor, patron surveys show high satisfaction levels, with over 95% of respondents saying they would recommend our outdoor pools to a friend or neighbor. Thank you for continuing to support these wonderful facilities.

In October the Park District’s new Park Services building received recognition from the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD) in the Best Green Practices award category for the innovative use of green building materials in its construction. The recently completed sound berm between I-294 and The Grove also earned first runner up honors in IAPD’s Intergovernmental Cooperation Award category. This is a great example of the Park District working with another government agency for the benefit of our residents. The intergovernmental agreement allowed for the expansion of the tollway while better protecting an environmentally sensitive area.

The Park District is moving ahead with the renovation of the 82-year old administration building at 1930 Prairie St. to make sure it can continue to serve the community into the 21st century. Several different options were considered before deciding that updating the existing building was the most cost-effective solution. The interior will be remodeled to better utilize the existing space while maintaining the building’s historic character.

We are also joining forces with two foundations -- the Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA) Foundation and the Glenview Park Foundation -- to transform the Willow Park Fieldhouse into a facility that will better serve Willow Park neighbors and people with special needs. These improvements allow us to better utilize one of the park district’s assets by providing localized opportunities for all our residents and for NSSRA programming and life skills training.

Construction has already begun on a new carriage house and pavilion adjacent to the Redfield Estate at The Grove. The carriage house will provide storage space for the estate’s special events along with external public restrooms. The pavilion will offer additional space for programs, special events and public rentals. Over 90% of the funds for these projects come from sources other than taxes, like grants and donations.

Just in time for the holidays, the Glenview Park District’s Gift Card is “cash on a card” which can be programmed to store any amount—from a $5 teacher’s gift or week of camp to a Golf Pass or a Park Center Health & Fitness membership. In short, it’s good for whatever programs, events, or activities the recipient desires. Gift cards can be purchased in person at most Glenview Park District locations.

We are pleased to unveil our new virtual brochure. The digital version lets you flip pages and browse or quickly find an activity using the electronic table of contents. Bookmark programs and events for later reference or register for them on the spot. Check it out on the home page of our website, glenviewparks.org.

What does the New Year hold in store for the Glenview Park District? January marks the 10th anniversary of Park Center, a true community resource and a busy, vibrant hub for all ages and for all seasons. Be on the lookout for special events and activities and I hope you’ll join in the celebration.

This winter proves once again that it is never boring around the Glenview Park District. Bundle up, head outside and enjoy Glenview’s beautiful parks or take part in a bounty of winter programs and events. They are yours to experience and enjoy!

As always, the Glenview Park Board and staff are here to serve you and your family. We are committed to keeping Glenview one of the top park districts in Illinois and I appreciate your comments and suggestions.
