Fall 2010

Dear Neighbor:

If there’s one thing the Chicago Blackhawks have shown us, it’s this: if you don’t have a plan for success, you’ll have a hard time achieving it. The road to winning the National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup seems a fitting metaphor for the Glenview Park District’s own journey, which began earlier this summer with the approval of our second consecutive Strategic Plan for 2010-2013.

Like the Blackhawks who delivered a winning season to their fans, the Glenview Park District exists to deliver excellent services and programs to our residents. The Strategic Plan, “Delivering Excellence through Innovation,” is our game plan and will be accomplished through the following strategic initiatives:

  • Continue a Course of Conservative Fiscal Planning
  • Enhance the Experience at Facilities & Parks
  • Expand Environmental and Historical Stewardship
  • Broaden and Strengthen Community & Intergovernmental Relationships
  • Enhance the Food Service Experience
  • Deliver Innovative, Customer-Focused Programming and Exceptional Customer Service
  • Optimize Our Talent Pool
  • Expand Strategic Marketing to Achieve Business

The 2010-2013 Strategic Plan will soon be available at glenviewparks.org.

Another lesson learned from the Blackhawks’ victory is that you won’t get anywhere without exceptional teamwork. We have had a long and positive history of cooperation with the Village of Glenview to meet the needs of our community. In May, the Village transferred the management of Gallery Park to the Park District. It makes sense for the Glenview Park District, an expert in open space program planning and stewardship, to now take over the management of this wonderful community amenity. Village Board President Kerry Cummings and Park Commissioner and past president Judy Beck are to be commended for working together to make this happen.

There was no shortage of other reasons to celebrate at the Glenview Park District this summer! The Grove marked the 175th anniversary of the birth of Robert Kennicott with a new exhibition tracing his incredible story through maps, photographs and artifacts open through October 3.

The Gazebo Grill at the Glenview Park Golf Club continued to be a popular spot to celebrate the end of the work week with music and food on select Friday nights. Catch the last Friday Night Live performance, featuring Replay, on July 30. Bearfoot in the Park Outdoor Concerts at Jackman Park wrap up with a performance by the Rhythm Rockets on August 4. Take a trip to The Glenview Farmer’s Market at Wagner Farm, every Saturday through October 9. Soak up the remaining days of summer at Flick and Roosevelt Pools. Both are open through August 22. Post season hours at Roosevelt run through Labor Day Weekend.

Finally, I’d like to express the Board’s deepest gratitude to Glenview Senior Center Director Joyce Pottinger and Senior Center Office Manager Sheila Raffe, who both retired at the end of June. Joyce was with the Senior Center since its inception in 1958. Her energy, enthusiasm and creativity have been the solid foundation upon which the Senior Club has grown into the outstanding organization it is today. Twenty-one years ago Sheila became Joyce’s “right arm,” helping to manage the Center’s ever-growing schedule of events and activities. Joyce and Sheila’s contributions have vastly enriched recreation opportunities for so many. They will be missed.

Fall is just around the corner, and the park district will usher in an exciting new season of athletic leagues, programs and special events. We want you and your family to be a part of it.

Michael Scholl
