Map/Directions
Air Station Prairie gives visitors the opportunity to experience what much of northern Illinois was like during pre-settlement conditions. Exhibits at the Tyner Interpretive Center provide a better understanding of this unique environment while pathways through the property allow visitors to experience the changes in the prairie through the various seasons.
The 3,000-square foot Interpretive Center also serves as a showcase for "green technology," and has been certified by the U. S. Green Building Council as LEED Platinum, the highest possible designation under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system. The building features a number of environmentally sound design attributes including a Green roof.
Air Station Prairie is a 32-acre remnant of a tallgrass prairie than once stretched for millions of square miles across much of the North American continent. It has a 13,000-year history and some very surprising stories to tell. Come explore and enjoy our exhibits, our "Teaching Prairie" and interpretive nature trails. Look carefully, and you will discover:
- who walked this land for hundreds of years before you
- the invention that tipped the balance for the North American prairies, and began their disappearance
- why it is called “Air Station Prairie” and the surprising role it played in World War II
- some of the animals and plants of the prairie and the strategies they’ve adopted over time to deal with drought and rain, heat, cold and fire
- the story of prairie soil, and your chance to take a worm’s-eye view beneath the prairie
- a ‘green’ building-how it works and why it is so important to us today
- some historical ‘Heroes of the Prairie’ who have worked hard to preserve this unique type of natural system
- how you can help protect our prairie heritage.
The Evelyn Pease Tyner Interpretive Center is available for public use as a meeting place for volunteers, for tour groups and for school field trips to educate through presentations, interpretive displays, literature and self-guided tours.

Prairie Restoration Work Days
Sponsored by the North Branch Restoration Project, seasonal activities include brush cutting, weed removal and seed collection. For a work day schedule visit the NBRP website at www.northbranchrestoration.org.
Plant a Rain Garden
Glenview residents can help our local environment by planting a rain garden in their yard. Rain gardens reduce the amount of water conveyed into the local storm water system. The vegetation in a rain garden filters the water, reducing pollutants that can end up in our natural waterways. The Village of Glenview currently has a program to partially reimburse residents for costs involved in planting a rain garden. For details on this programs, click here.
The following programs will be offered in Summer 2008.
